Lab vs Natural

Both are real diamonds. Understanding the difference helps you choose the stone that aligns with your values, budget and priorities.

The Basics

Both Are Real Diamonds

Lab-grown and natural diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical. Both are pure carbon crystallised in the same structure. The difference lies in origin — one forms over billions of years beneath the earth, the other is created in a controlled environment over weeks.

Neither choice is wrong. The best diamond is the one that resonates with you.

Natural Diamond

Earth-Formed

Created by nature over 1–3 billion years under extreme heat and pressure, 150km below the earth's surface. Every natural diamond is a geological miracle — utterly unique.

  • Formed over billions of years — rare and finite
  • Strong emotional and symbolic heritage
  • Historically proven resale market
  • Each stone is completely unique
  • Graded identically by GIA / IGI
  • Higher price per carat
  • Mining has environmental impact
Lab-Grown Diamond

Science-Grown

Grown in controlled facilities using CVD or HPHT technology that replicates the natural formation process. Identical in every measurable way to a mined diamond.

  • Chemically and optically identical to natural
  • Significantly lower price — more carat for your budget
  • No mining — lower environmental footprint
  • Certified and graded by GIA / IGI
  • Conflict-free with full traceability
  • Value depreciation faster than natural
  • Less rarity — perceived by some as less precious

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Can anyone tell the difference between a lab and natural diamond?
No gemologist, jeweller or person can tell the difference with the naked eye. The only way to distinguish them is with highly specialised equipment (such as a Diamond Sure or DiamondView machine) that detects microscopic growth patterns. Your jeweller will always disclose which type you are purchasing.
Do lab diamonds hold their value?
Lab diamonds have depreciated significantly in secondary market value as production has scaled and prices have dropped. Natural diamonds have a more established resale market, though all diamond jewellery should primarily be viewed as a sentimental purchase rather than a financial investment.
Are lab diamonds more ethical than natural diamonds?
Lab diamonds eliminate concerns around mining practices. However, the industry has improved significantly — all natural diamonds we source are conflict-free and Kimberley Process certified. Many natural diamond mines also support local communities and economies. Ultimately, both options can be sourced ethically.
Which should I choose for an engagement ring?
This is entirely personal. If budget is a priority and you want maximum size and sparkle, lab-grown is excellent value. If rarity, geological heritage and long-term resale market matter to you, natural may be the better fit. Both are equally beautiful — our team is happy to show you examples of both side by side.
Does Lavish sell both lab and natural diamonds?
Yes. We carry a curated selection of both natural and lab-grown diamonds across all shapes, cuts and carat weights. Every stone is independently certified by GIA or IGI. We will always clearly label which type each diamond is.
